Academic excellence

  • Prof. Peter was involved in the development of bacterial wilt resistant varieties in tomato, eggplant and chillies.
  • He developed along with late Dr P J Mathai the chilli varieties Pant C-1 and Pant C-2 resistant to leaf curl virus and thrips.
  • The high production technologies developed by the team of scientists led by Prof. Peter pushed up cardamom productivity from 70kg/ha in 1992-1993 to 149kg/ha in 1997-98.
  • Black pepper productivity also shot up from 268kg/ha  in 1992-93 to 311 kg/ha in 1995-96.
  • He edited the 3 volume Handbook of Herbs and Spices published by Wood Head Publishing  Company, UK and CRC USA
  • 12 Volume Series onHorticultural Sciences’4 volume series on Underutilized and Underexploited Horticultural Crops published by NIPA New Delhi
  • Three volume series on Biodiversity of Horticultural Crops.
  • National Book Trust published his authored book Plantation Crops in 3 languages.

Research Accomplishments

  • He established the first vegetable seed production complex at KAU in 1980-81 and made extensive effort to establish kitchen gardens in Kerala.
  • He facilitated establishment of a Biotechnology Facility at IISR Calicutwhich later developed protocol for micropropagation of 52 spices.
  • He led a central sector scheme costing Rs 28 crores to manage Phytophthora foot rot in black pepper in Kerala,Tamil Nadu,  Karnataka and North East.
  • He guided over 75 students for Ph.D and masters'  degree students.
  • His book on Statistics and Computer Programmes in Biometric Research published by G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology is still referred.
